Top Tips When Choosing your Wedding Registry

Gift Registry Ideas

When it comes to weddings, we'd go as far as to say there are too many options out there. And while most stores & services make planning and choosing as easy as possible, there still are several things to consider when choosing the best registry for you. So we've cut to the chase on wedding registries, to provide a definitive guide to help you get sorted.

Set up your registry early

It is becoming perfectly customary to announce the details of your registry after you announce your engagement. Many loved ones will appreciate the suggestion when it comes to purchasing and/or sending engagement and shower gifts.

What registry to choose? How many registries?

Most wedding experts recommend registering at two stores or services to make gift buying more accessible for guests. Online registries make the process super easy for most people, but a few still insist on shopping in-store. So, consider what format (online/in-store) is most convenient and affordable for your guest list - we always err on the side of simplicity, so would encourage just one registry if you think it will work for you.

Depending on the types of gifts do you'd like to receive (kitchen items, honeymoon trips, camping gear, art, cash, etc…), you can register at a specific store or, we'd (obviously) recommend registering online using a universal gift registry that allows you to choose any items from any store, experiences and even cash.

Not interested in traditional gifts? You can also register for a honeymoon, charity donations, home improvements or whatever you like! Read more: What to put on your wedding registry when you already have everything you need.

Choose items at varying price points (but only items you love!)

By adding many options to your registry, you make it easier for guests to purchase gifts. A rule of thumb is to register for more gifts than guests, giving them the option to choose. An alternative, of course, is to suggest a group gift (see next point).

Register for group gifts

Group gifting is really a great option to consider, especially when it would be most helpful for loved ones to direct their gift giving towards things like a honeymoon, down payment on a house, home renovations or other larger, more expensive items. Most registries make it easy to set up group gifts, so that people can contribute however much they chose, towards the gift.

Consider the extra costs: shipping, processing fees & exchange rates

While we all expect to pay more than the sticker price of an item, be aware of huge additional costs for your guests. Expensive shipping costs, inflated taxes and/or U.S. exchange rates will likely turn people off! When it comes to online registries, consider the fees. Some charge a flat annual or monthly fee for couples, while sites like Giftspaces charges the buyer the minimal processing fee (still less than tax and shipping).

Spread the word!

Don’t be shy - your guests want to know what you want! Be prepared to tell them about your gift registry once you announce your engagement.
