How To Nail Your Canadian Fall Wedding in 4 Easy Steps
Fall weddings are seriously on the rise. And it's no surprise given the myriad of benefits - temperatures cool off a bit, people's schedules have calmed down post Summer, venues are more available, not to mention cheaper - combined with the stunning colours and ambience that come with the time of year, there are so many reasons to love the romance of a Fall wedding.
We've put together a four step guide to help you take advantage of the season, with a little help from our friends.
1) VENUE CHOICE: TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE STUNNING NATURAL BACKDROP
Depending on the temperature you may need an indoor venue, or if you're lucky you'll still be able to hold the ceremony outdoors. Either way, look for a venue with a natural backdrop and big windows to capture nature's incredible beauty and vibrant colours. Raw materials, cosy spaces, fireplaces and rustic details add to the ambience. Selecting a venue that enables you to really play up to the season will lay the best foundation for everything else.
2) COLOUR AND DETAILING: LET NATURE INSPIRE YOUR DESIGN CHOICES - BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO OVERBOARD
Inspiration for Fall weddings is abundant, but you don't by any stretch have to be locked into the traditional colour palettes of red, yellow and orange hues. Go with whatever you love, and you can add pops of the season through accents. Tellie Hunt from Toronto's Coriandergirl florist advises to "opt for a classic palette with colours that transition to give an ombre effect - burgundy to coral, coral to peach, peach to champagne and champagne to cream. This look will be a lot more pleasing to the eye as it will not have as much as a contrast."
Fall flowers are arguably the most stunning and rich of any season. Talk to your florist about all types of blooms that are available in the fall and create arrangements that are truly your style. Hunt notes "There are lots of seasonal blooms which are magnificent at this time of the year. Some of my favourites are dahlias, zinnias, smokebush, limelight hydrangea and sedum. Tell your florist you like "smokey tones" or a "moody palette" - this will allow them a bit of flexibility to not be limited to exact colours. That way they can select the most amazing fall blooms and give you something that is slightly unexpected."
Other ideas for Fall wedding detailing:
- Set a romantic, warm glow with fire places, candle lights and fairy lights.
- A rich color palette incorporating shades of gold, burgundy, bronze and copper.
- Leaves and branches add colour and drama to arrangements and tables.
- White pumpkins can add a beautiful, modern twist. Large pumpkins can be carved to be used as table numbers, while mini pumpkins and gourds can serve as place card holders.
3) FOOD: TREAT YOUR GUESTS TO HEARTY COMFORT EATS
More so than any season. food is a huge defining element of the Fall and there are plenty of options to feed a big crowd. From roast turkey to freshly baked apple and pumpkin pie, fall food is synonymous with family, love and cosiness.
Fruits of the harvest like apples, pumpkins, and berries can also work well in floral arrangements and centerpieces.
It doesn't end at the meal. Follow the theme through to drinks with a signature cocktail that incorporates cinnamon whisky or Applejack brandy. if there's an outdoor area, get a fire pit going with smores and hot chocolate (Bailey's included!) for the end of the night.
4) FASHION: ADD LUXURIOUS ACCENTS
Long sleeved gowns are everywhere now and are perfect for Fall weddings, although not essential. It's easy to add a shrug or shawl to any gown for added warmth.
Accessories can be all that's needed to complement the time of year. It's a perfect opportunity to wear bold statement pieces or add some vintage-inspired elements to your look. Try a striking hairpiece, gloves, antique brooch or shoes that pop colour.
Bridesmaids’ dresses can really pull in the colors of Fall — burgundy, forest or mint green and red are all popular colors this time of year. Shades of grey, navy, lavender and soft pinks also complement seasonal shades beautifully.
Men always look suave in traditional tuxes or darks suits and these are perfect for the Fall. Little details on boutonnières, neck scarves, or vests can add seasonal touches.
